UK schools winners 2008

First prize

Ringmer Community College, East Sussex

Stephen Green, Kathy Stonier and pupils

Secondary pupil-led commitment to managing energy

Ringmer Community College has 800 pupils aged 11-16. Pupils are actively involved in environmental activities. 200 have chosen to be Eco-Reps and monitor energy use; help with the manual control of the ageing heating system; and 'name and shame' departments which waste energy. They have been involved in the design of a new 6th form building, and give presentations about their work. The school generates some of its electricity from a 2.5 kW wind turbine and a 7.5 kW solar photovoltaic array.

Second prize

Sandhills Primary School, Oxford

Maureen Stephens, Joe Johnson and pupils

Sustainable energy throughout culture and curriculum of a primary school

Sandhills is a 200-pupil primary school on the outskirts of Oxford. It has a long-term commitment to sustainability, and negotiated successfully for extra energy-efficiency measures when the school was rebuilt in 2003. Pupils in the Energy Team check equipment in classrooms, run competitions, read energy meters, and graph the readings. Energy is taught throughout the curriculum, and sustainability is the theme of the current drama production. Pupils and parents contributed to the cost of a 5 kW wind turbine.
