His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, delivering the keynote speech at the 2009 Ashden Awards

Film: Awards evening 2009

Every year the Ashden Awards holds a vibrant ceremony attended by around 500 people including leading figures from the business, academic, investor, environmental, political and media spheres.

The evening comprises a keynote speech from an international figure and a showcase of our finalists: sustainable energy solutions from right across the UK and the developing world.

Our winners are local pioneers of green energy, ranging from community groups to schools, businesses, local authorities and energy efficiency schemes. What they share is a commitment to address climate change and bring social and economic benefits that radically improve people's lives. The ceremony captures their unique and inspiring stories through a series of short films.

Ashden Award ceremonies have been addressed by many leading figures including HRH Prince Charles, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, former US Vice President Al Gore, David Cameron MP, Hilary Benn MP, Lord May of Oxford, Dr RK Pachauri and Sir David Attenborough.

"No one can attend an event like the Ashden Awards and fail to be inspired. What impresses me most about these projects is that they truly are becoming the change that is needed in the world. These Awards tell us how to illuminate the path to a sustainable future together."
Al Gore, former US Vice President speaking at the Ashden Awards ceremony, June 21 2007.
