Sarah Butler-Sloss, Chair of International Judges
Founder and Executive Chair of the Ashden Awards
Sarah set up the Ashden Trust, a Sainsbury Family Charitable Trust, in 1989. The Trust has initiated a wide range of environmental and social regeneration projects in the UK and the developing world. In 2001 she started the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy. Sarah is also a trustee of the sustainable development charity Forum for the Future.
Sarah Adams
CEO, GVEP International
Prior to joining GVEP International in February 2006, Sarah Adams was the International Partnerships Manager for the Access Programme set up by Electricite de France (EDF). Over the 12 years she spent with EDF, she worked on a wide range of energy projects including building sustainable energy solutions for rural and slum areas in Latin America, Asia and Africa. She also interacted with a wide range of public and private sector partners and established the International Working Group on Monitoring and Evaluation of Energy for Development (M&EED).
Dominic Brain
Head of Programme Funding Division, Christian Aid
Whilst with Christian Aid Dominic has worked largely in Central America and South Asia. He is responsible for mobilising and managing Christian Aid’s funds for development and humanitarian issues from governments and institutional donors.
Dominic introduced environmental management systems and approaches to Christian Aid, including carbon footprinting and ecological footprinting approaches.
Adam Brett
Founder and Chairman, Tropical Wholefoods
Adam Brett is a Director of Fullwell Mill Ltd, a business that markets the Tropical Wholefoods range of fairtrade & organic food products which are sourced from small farmers in Uganda, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Tanzania, Zambia & Costa Rica. Fullwell Mill work directly with partners in these countries to produce a range of sustainably manufactured foods. Adam is also a trustee of another Sainsbury's family charity The Kilimo Trust which works in East Africa.
John Magrath
Programme Researcher, Oxfam
John Magrath is a journalist and researcher who has worked for Oxfam GB for more than 20 years in various capacities, including Executive Assistant to the Director. His recent focus has been on the implications of climate change for Oxfam's work.
Mike Mason
Director, Climate Care
Mike Mason set up Climate Care in 1998 which is now a market leader in the provision of voluntary carbon offsets. He also set up Biojoule - a company developing radically new biomass technologies. Mike graduated as a mining engineer, worked in the oil industry then founded several healthcare and IT businesses, before ‘retiring’ and gaining a Masters in Environmental Change and Management at Oxford University.
Andrew Simms
Policy Director and head of climate change programme, New Economics Foundation
Andrew Simms is a board member of Greenpeace UK and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Europe. He's worked for a variety of development and environmental organisations, including Christian Aid, the International Red Cross, Oxfam, and the World Development Movement.
Dr Anne Wheldon
Technical Director, The Ashden Awards
Anne Wheldon has a PhD in environmental physics. At the University of Reading, she worked as senior lecturer in renewable energy and director of the MSc programme in renewable energy and the environment, with a particular interest in solar energy and carbon management. In this capacity she has acted as technical assessor and judge of the Ashden Awards from their inception.
Anne took up post of Technical Director of the Ashden Awards in 2005, responsible for technical assessment of applications, seminars and technical communication.
Martin Wright
Editor-in-Chief, Green Futures
Martin Wright is a writer, photojournalist and communications and strategy adviser on the environment and sustainable futures. As special adviser to the Ashden Awards, Martin has travelled widely in Africa, Asia and the Far East, carrying out assessment visits.
He has won the Environment Council’s Science and Environment Journalist of the Year Award, a Travelex Travel Writer of the Year Award and a Wildlife Photographer of the year award.

Professor Paul Ekins, Chair of UK judges
Professor of Energy and Environment Policy, King's College London
Paul Ekins was previously Head of the Environment Group at the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) and Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Westminster. In 2002 he was appointed to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He is Co-Director of the UK Energy Research Centre.
He is a consultant to the Sustainable Development Commission, a member of the High Level Environmental Advisory Group of Ofgem, the UK gas and electricity regulator and a member of the Government’s Sustainable Energy Policy Advisory Board.

Peter Capener
Independent Energy Consultant
Peter Capener has an MSc in Energy Resource, and has worked in the sustainable energy field for over 20 years, including seven years as Chief Executive of the Centre for Sustainable Energy. Since 2002 Peter has worked as an independent sustainable energy consultant on a range of projects for various private, public and voluntary sector clients.
David Irwin
Partner, Irwin Grayson Associates
David Irwin holds an Honours Degree in Engineering Science and Management and an MBA. He is a social entrepreneur and a consultant in enterprise and economic development. He is non-executive Chairman of Cobweb Information Ltd and a director of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He is also a member of the Investment Committee and non-executive member of the board for Oxfam's Enterprise Development Programme. He was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion in 2009.
Emma Jones
Director, Impetus Consulting Ltd.
Emma Jones has been a director at Impetus Consulting since 2000, and before that worked with the Association for the Conservation of Energy. She has been closely involved with the Home Energy Conservation Act and was also a trustee of the Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust from 2001 to 2004.
Whitni Thomas
Investment Manager, Triodos Bank
Whitni joined Triodos Bank in May 2006 with responsibility for structuring venture capital investments in social businesses. In addition to being the UK’s largest social lender, Triodos is a leading finance provider to small-scale renewable energy projects. Whitni is a trustee of the Friends Provident Foundation and on the advisory group of Philanthropy UK.

Mike Wolfe
Chief Executive, CREATE
Mike Wolfe joined CREATE, an organisation supporting sustainable energy in schools and colleges, in 1991, and has helped 100's of organisations make use of renewable technologies and energy efficiency measures. He has managed projects on behalf of Defra, DfES, the Environment Agency, local authorities and the private sector. He has also worked overseas on EU funded programmes and for the British Council.
